第２７章 無生物主語を含む英文
英語では一部の動詞以外は「生物」でも「無生物」でも主語にすることが多いです。この章では、このような英語の特徴的な表現である無生物主語について、そのような主語をとりやすい動詞を中心に取り扱います。

27-1. make, enable, cause, compel, force, oblige「（無理矢理に）〜させる, 〜の原因となる」
「使役・起因・強制」などを示す上のような動詞は、無生物主語をとりやすい傾向があります。

上の文は直訳ではそれぞれ「幸せにした」、「可能にした」、「（ぎくっとする）原因になった」、「（無理に）駆り立てて（狂気に）させた」、「貧困が余儀なく〜させた」などとなりますが、やや不自然な日本語になります。
27-2. allow, permit「許す」

27-5. prevent, keep「妨げる、抑止する」

27-7. disclose, reveal, say, show「示す、明らかにする」

27-8. remind, suggest「〜を想起させる、連想させる」

27-9. 感情を表す動詞（delight, disappoint, surpriseなど）

この種の動詞は「人」（上の文1〜3の目的語）を主語とした受動態表現も多い。

27-11. 無生物主語の訳し方
今までの例文の訳や、ところどころに示した書き換えなどからわかるように、日本語に訳す場合には無生物主語をそのまま主語にしない方がよいです。日本語では無生物主語を「手段（〜によって）」、「条件（〜すれば）」、「原因・理由（〜して、〜のために）」などの副詞（句）に言い換え、英文で動詞の目的語となっている「人」や「生物」を主語とした日本語を作ります。
| An eight hours’ flight will take you to Hawaii.（あなたは飛行機に8時間乗ればハワイに着くでしょう） |
| The song reminded me of my home.（私はその歌で私の故郷を思い出した） |
| A careful observation shows that there is a wide variety of insects even in the middle of modern cities.＜手段＞（念入りに観察してみることによって、近代都市の真ん中にもたくさんの種類の昆虫がいることがわかります） |
